Description

Common Name: Quercus palustris is commonly known as the pin oak.

Common Uses: The pin oak is valued for its ornamental appeal in landscaping due to its distinctive pyramidal shape and brilliant red fall foliage. It is often planted along streets, in parks, and in residential areas for its aesthetic qualities. Additionally, its wood is occasionally used in furniture making and for fuel.

Interesting Fact: The pin oak gets its name from the small, sharp-tipped, 'pin-like' lobes on its leaves. These leaves turn a vibrant red in the autumn, creating a stunning visual display.

Growth Characteristics:

Width and Height in 10 Years:

In its initial decade of growth, Quercus palustris typically demonstrates a moderate growth rate. The width of the tree can vary but generally falls between 4 to 6 meters (13 to 20 feet), while its height may reach approximately 7 to 10 meters (23 to 33 feet) during this period.

Maximum Height:

Mature pin oaks can reach heights of around 18 to 22 meters (60 to 70 feet), with exceptional specimens exceeding these measurements. They typically have a spread of 12 to 15 meters (40 to 50 feet).
