Magnolia x soulangeana ‘Old Port’, also known as the Saucer Magnolia, is an outstanding tree with captivating features. Here are the details:
- Flowers: Wine-red flowers with an off-white interior bloom in spring before the leaves appear. These flowers have a delicate fruity scent and consist of six tepals, typically 9 cm long by 6 cm wide.
- Growth: It grows to approximately 4 meters (10-year height) tall and 3 meters wide.
- Foliage: Crisp green leaves add freshness to the tree.
- Origin: A hybrid between Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora, it was first recognized from deliberate crosses made by Étienne Soulange-Bodin in France.
- Selection: ‘Old Port’ was selected in 1992 by Vance Hooper in New Plymouth, New Zealand.
