Benefits of bare-rooted trees As the saying goes, "the best time to plant a tree was 30 years ago. The second best time is today". When, really, is the best time to plant a tree in your backyard? Here at Aston Norwood we believe the best time to plant large grade, deciduous trees is in Winter, when they are dormant and available to be purchased bare-rooted. But what are bare-rooted trees and what makes them so great? Bare-rooted trees refer to trees that have been grown in the ground in field nurseries after which their roots are pruned and they are lifted out of the ground. Trees grown in this way are only available for a brief period during Winter, when they dormant and able to be lifted out of the ground. Care must also be taken when transporting and storing bare-rooted trees as their roots are exposed directly to the environment and so must be protected from drying out or being damaged. In our opinion, the upside of bare-rooted trees far outweighs the downsides, and if properly cared for during storage, transport, and planting they can provide a cost-effective way to get large grade trees established. Bare-rooted trees are often 10 - 20% cheaper than their container grown counterparts due to the reduced labour requirements and increased scalability of their production. As the name suggests, bare-rooted trees have no soil around their roots. This means that their roots have direct contact with the soil they are planted into and so establish faster than their container grown counterparts. Bare-rooted trees are also significantly more environmentally friendly than container grown trees due to requiring no plastic pot and being much lighter and easier to transport and handle.
Whether bare-rooted trees are the right choice depends on your situation. If you are looking at planting a large number of deciduous trees, whether they are Flowering Cherry's, Magnolias, Japanese maples, or Fruit Tree's, and your site will be ready this Winter then they are the choice for you. They offer a great way to get a large area planted efficiently, cost-effectively, and are likely to have a higher rate of success. So whether you want to plant out a new orchard, line a driveway, or add a pop of Spring colour to your garden, our bare-rooted trees will do the job.
